Dana Michaels @ Ottawa Candance Convention - Nov 17-18

Dana Michaels was in Ottawa this weekend teaching the tap portion of the traveling Candance convention along side other notable dancers including Misha Gabrieal, Mikeal Knight, Tiffany Mclean, and and Benji Schwimmer (of So You Think You Can Dance fame).

Michael's taught a variety of rhythmic tap sessions, including a special teacher's class.  Her combination of creativity, speed, with an emphasis of on weight transfer and centre, were (at least for this heavily biased blogger) a highlight of the weekend.

These combo hiphop/jazz/lyrical/tap mega-workshops may not be ideal for single-minded dance folks like myself but they are a great way to see highly talented individuals in a variety of different styles that might not otherwise make it out this way.

I've included a picture of her (along with her two assistants, of which I never got their names unfortunately) with some of our students.

I couldn't find a video of her but here's a routine on youtube attributed to her. Link.

New Tap Dancing Blog!

Hi all,

Despite producing some very fine tap dancers, Ottawa doesn't really have a tap dance community or centralized point for posting things like events or workshops. So I thought I'd take the lead and start a blog with an associated mailing list (tapitaldance@yahoogroups.com).

If you are interested in tap dance, irish/celtic/ottawa valley step dancing, clogging, or other forms of percussive dance, drop me a line; I'd love to hear from you.
